Salesforce.com and VMware got tongues wagging this month by slyly launching an internet site called VMforce.com. It's expected to be a replacement cloud computing development service which will be jointly offered by the 2 companies. Both vendors are staying quiet until the official announcement next week, but indications are that it'll be a Platform as a Service (PaaS) aimed toward Java developers, powered and travel by VMware and closely tied to alesforce.com's growing ecosystem of service providers. VMforce is going to be aimed toward Software as a Service (SaaS) and Web services developers, not traditional software makers, although there is a strong possibility it'll eventually broaden to incorporate more computing infrastructure services If you check out Zimbra, that was the primary big clue that VMware wants to urge into hosted services, not just hosted services, but highly customizable services," said Gregg Rosenberg, owner of IT services firm RICIS, Inc. and extended time virtualization and SaaS watcher. VMware acquired Zimbra, an email hosting and open source collaboration software company, in January.
Rosenberg didn't know the small print of VMforce but said a platform makes perfect sense and features up with VMware's recent acquisitions and position within the market. Salesforce.com liked the thought enough that it partnered with Unit 4 to launch FinancialForce.com, hosting the applications and users and sharing revenue with Unit 4.
Sources speculate that VMforce is going to be an identical deal, except that VMware will do the initial hosting. Salesforce.com will provide the portal to the applications. Presumably, developers who use VMforce to make Java applications also will be ready to use the Force.com hosting and sales platform to deliver those applications. CloudShare launched FastCloud on April 19 to enable easy migration of VMware environments, and consistent with CloudShare CEO Zvi Guterman, FastCloud's services are going to be "complementary to hosting services like VMforce.
" Following the breadcrumbs Another clue is often found within the location of the web site. is found on an IP address (18.104.22.168) that VMware hosts with Savvis, a hosting company that gives computing and communications infrastructure for VMware.com. it is a sign that VMware intends for the VMforce.com Web portal to measure on servers and infrastructure hosted by one among its vCloud hosting partners. an equivalent infrastructure also hosts Thinstall.com (an earlier name for ThinApp), VMwaretechnologyexchange.com, VMware.com itself and other VMware services. it is also possible that Salesforce.com could provide the rear end too. Analysts and IT experts contacted for this story agreed that there was a robust opportunity for VMware and Salesforce.com to partner on hosting since each has something the opposite lacks and everyone would benefit. Other PaaS offerings are either immature or of dubious utility within the enterprise world. Google App Engine, for instance, is free and aimed toward individual developers and Web startups, and Microsoft's Windows Azure remains a piece ongoing.
VMware has the lion's share of enterprise virtualization customers and SpringSource may be a relatively polished and mature development platform. Java is that the hottest open development language and Salesforce.com desperately want the eye of those developers on its Force.com platform. RightScale has added a way requested feature to its cloud management product -- support for user-created virtual machine (VM) images. Before the announcement of the RightScale Cloud Management Platform, users would choose a RightScale VM image, or create their own using templates and preapproved scripts, and manage them with RightScale's Web portal. Now users can create their own images (typically Amazon Machine Images used on Amazon Web Services), modify them any way they like, launch them and install a service from RightScale that permits the pictures to enjoy a full range of monitoring and management inside the RightScale portal. RightScale CTO Thorsten von Eicken said in an interview that it had been one among the foremost requested features from users.

Fujitsu announces a kinder, gentler global cloud strategy
IT giant Fujitsu's new cloud strategy may startle industry watchers since it's apparently "human-centric and most within the know had previously considered cloud computing to more focused on computers. The hardware and services provider said the new strategy will include an information and communication technology (ICT) standardized service offering intended first for Fujitsu data center customers which will "complement the local cloud platforms." Fujitsu says the main aim of its cloud strategy is to supply a "non-disruptive" way for patrons to gradually integrate current IT with cloud services. That's welcome news to the weary faithful, who are sick to the gills and nervous wrecks from constantly being assaulted by histrionics about "disruptive technologies" which will "revolutionize" everything
